Handle With Care Exemplifies How Sectors Can Partner to Mitigate the Impact of Trauma on Kids
Law enforcement is called to the scene of a domestic violence incident where children are present. Mom receives medical attention and her partner leaves in the back of the police car. The children arrive at school the next day physically and emotionally exhausted. They may complain of physical ailments, have emotional meltdowns, or act out towards their peers. In short, they are in no shape to effectively engage in classroom learning, and neither teachers nor school staff know why.

Handle with Care: A Partnership between Law Enforcement and Educators
During this session, hear from Andrea Darr, the founder of Handle With Care; Becky Haas, an experienced law enforcement trainer; Teri Lawler, who is leading the work in trauma-informed practices and social emotional learning at the Delaware Department of Education; and Zoe Lyons, who has implemented Handle With Care as Director of the Jackson County Office of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Each will share insights about how the program has become a promising cross-sector and trauma-responsive practice in their state.
